Although many educators doubt that young students can wear face coverings all day, each state advises using masks to decrease transmission of the disease. Some states advise all students and staff to wear masks in school and on the bus, while others require masks only for older students. While most states are advising districts to have some masks on hand in case students or staff forget them, face coverings are otherwise the responsibility of individuals to provide.
Many states, like Maryland and North Dakota, emphasize that face coverings are most important when social distancing cannot be observed. Massachusetts suggests implementing face covering “breaks” when students can remain 6 feet apart.
