Incumbent Republican Doug Ducey defeated Democrat David Garcia in the Arizona governor’s race, according to projections from ABC News

Education was perhaps the hottest topic in Arizona politics this year, sparked by massive #RedforEd teacher walkouts in April, which lasted six days and resulted in Ducey promising a 20 percent pay raise for teachers by 2020.

Garcia supported the teachers during the walkouts and criticized Ducey for underfunding schools. The local Arizona station, ABC15, had Ducey with 58 percent of the vote, compared to Garcia’s 40 percent, with 8 percent of districts reporting.

Ducey expressed support for expanding Arizona’s controversial education savings accounts, which was on the ballot for voters today. Garcia opposed the expansion.

Both candidates have said they favor more oversight for charter schools in the state, but Garcia was more forceful, saying the schools have a “profit motive” and aren’t transparent enough.

Ducey, who was first elected in 2014, vastly outspent Garcia.
